Drive makes tracks for CRUK

This summer Drive lay a 500m long 2-way running track along the southern bank of the River Thames in London, giving metropolitan runners a dedicated lane in which to run this popular Southbank route – and some encouragement for them to enter the Cancer Research UK ‘Run 10k’ series of charity fundraising events nationwide.

The event marks the launch by the charity of the world’s first urban running lane with the help of celebrity runner Nell McAndrew. The pilot scheme, a kilometre stretch of lane on the bustling south bank of the river, is designed to offer respite from runners’ pet peeves with an obstruction-free space to run at a steady pace.

Nell McAndrew said; “I’m a fan of outdoor running as it’s a fantastic way of keeping fit but running in busy areas can be difficult at times. The Run 10k Running Lane is a great way to fully appreciate the benefits of running with great views, fresh air and a clear route so I can keep my pace.

“I would encourage everyone to enter a Run 10k event this autumn and enjoy the many benefits of running outdoors while raising money to help fund Cancer Research UK’s lifesaving work into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.”

According to research carried out by Cancer Research UK, dawdling pedestrians test the patience of over a quarter (27%) of outdoor runners. But, according to the recent poll, this is nothing to the disturbances encountered by runners due to motorists, traffic and other interruptions to their routes. So Drive met the stringent specifications applied to events in this urban space and laid down 1.5km of specially sourced marking tape for this one-day event, allowing some of London’s urban athletes to run in peace.

That’s a lot of gaffa. 1.5 kilometres to be exact.

The ‘Run 10k’ series of events organised by this important charity also help raise awareness that keeping active is now to play an important role in the fight against this disease.

Natasha Dickinson from Cancer Research UK says: “Each year it is estimated that that as many as 1,500 deaths from cancer in the UK could be prevented if people kept more active. In fact our survey also found that almost two thirds of recreational runners (63%) in the UK don’t know that physical exercise can help reduce the risk of cancer.

The charity’s Run 10k series is a great way to start running by setting yourself an achievable goal. We have Run10k events taking place in wonderful locations and city centres across the country and this year we are urging everyone to enter, raise money and Run 10k to help us save more lives through our groundbreaking work.”

The first ‘Run 10k’ campaign took place in 2003 with three events. Now in its eight year, the ‘Run 10K’ campaign sees numerous events held in fantastic locations all over the country throughout the months of Autumn. This year alone CRUK are hoping to bring together 50,000 men and women to raise £5 million to help fund their vital research.

We thought we’d make a start by raising some of own: you can check out the pictures of Drive Productions’ 10k and make a donation here. Next year, come and join us in person.
