Reporting back on the ‘Deep Impact’ seminar we delivered at London’s RSVP Event Show in April. Hosted by Event Magazine Editor Jeremy King, directors Ben Fender and Imogen Hammond shared their expertise on how Drive make things happen in such a spectacular way, joining a panel of experts to discuss which standout events from the last twelve months have demonstrated deep impact, created a lasting impression and more importantly – why?
Our recent events for Cancer Research UK were the case studies up for discussion – and given that we’ve helped raise over 3 million for this vital charity over the past five years we felt justified in accepting the invitation. That’s not to say we weren’t delighted to be there: RSVP pride themselves on presenting the best suppliers in the business at their annual expo event, and through their dedication and enthusiasm for the party, special events and corporate hospitality industry annually attract 5,000 of the UK event industry’s leading planners and marketers.
Our Sound & Vision, 8 Rocks and the Emeralds & Ivy Ball were cited as examples for how to inject deep impact at all stages of event planning, delivery and post production. Here’s why:
Sound & Vision 2010 peaked with appearances from Newton Faulkner, Beth Neilson Chapman and the Led Zep legend that is Robert Plant, backed by the magnificent 72-strong London Oriana Choir. Year on year the funds raised have increased by a whopping 30% – considering the challenges faced by business during a national recession, this year’s staggering total of £260,000 can only be seen as exceptional. The Emeralds and Ivy Ball, supported by Ronan Keating, is now a firm fixture on the charity event calendar, attracting the likes of model Jodie Kidd, footballer Alan Shearer, Cilla Black, Rod Stewart, Sophie Ellis Bexter, Formula 1 presenter Tamara Eccleston and Five’s favourite newsreader Natasha Kaplinsky. The 2009 event beat its own expectations, raising over £645,000. The 2009 8Rocks extravaganza raised £610,000 from ticket and live auction proceeds and was royally attended, with HRH Prince Harry partying alongside sporting legends such as Sebastian Coe OBE.
Name and fame aside, it’s time to assert the real priorities. The money that these events have raised goes towards saving lives: the net profit directly funds crucial research into cancer cures and respite care. Hundreds of thousands of people have visited the units funded by these events, seeking advice from specialist nurses and thus reducing the national risks of developing cancer. That’s why making an impact can make a difference.
